With us at RFH Classics we are pleased to offer this exceptional 1971 (J) Volvo 164 3.0 four door saloon, finished in Gold Metallic with a Tan Leather interior and showing a remarkably low recorded mileage of just 46,400 miles. A wonderfully preserved example of Volvo’s flagship straight-six saloon. Our research suggests that only around 18 examples remain licensed on UK roads today, making this a genuinely rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts.

Over the past two years we have had the pleasure of selling four other Volvo 164 models, however this particular car stands head and shoulders above any of the previous examples we have offered both in terms of its condition and exceptionally low recorded mileage.

The car was supplied new by William Yeates Ltd of Leicestershire and first registered in March 1971. It benefits from a couple of particularly desirable factory options including a sunroof and the four speed manual gearbox with overdrive, a specification that greatly enhances the driving experience. Records show that in 2013 the car underwent a light restoration which included a repaint in its original colour which was completed to an excellent, virtually perfect standard. Based on the car’s condition and the documentation that accompanies it, we believe the mileage is very likely to be genuine, although it has not been formally verified.

Introduced in 1968, the Volvo 164 marked the return of the straight-six engine to Volvo’s range and was designed as a more luxurious executive saloon capable of competing with cars from Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar. Built on the proven 140 series platform, the 164 combined Volvo’s renowned durability and engineering integrity with a more refined interior featuring leather trim and higher levels of equipment. Under the bonnet sits the 3.0 litre B30 inline-six engine, known for its smooth power delivery and reliability, making the 164 a very capable and comfortable long distance car in its day.

On the road the Volvo delivers exactly what you would expect from a car of this era – smooth, refined and reassuringly solid, with the straight-six engine providing effortless performance and relaxed cruising.

Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file which includes the original Volvo book pack with a stamped service record, along with a large number of previous MOT certificates and maintenance invoices. Also included is an impressive collection of historic tax discs dating from 1972 through to the mid-2010s, a wonderful period detail rarely seen today. The file contains a nice feature of the car when it appeared in the Car Magazine together with records of an engine rebuild carried out in 2020 providing further reassurance as to the care this car has received over the years.

Altogether this is a rare and elegant Swedish classic, combining low mileage, desirable specification and a fascinating history file. It represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a very special example of Volvo’s flagship saloon, ready to be enjoyed by its next enthusiast owner or added to a collection of interesting classics.

With so few examples of the Volvo 164 remaining on UK roads today, particularly in this condition and with such low mileage, opportunities to acquire one are becoming increasingly rare.
