SUNBEAM S8

Motorcycle 500cc Direct Drive (1949)

This is my own personal Sunbeam S8 and it has been dry stored for the at least the past 9 years of my ownership. It has regularly been started and has good compression but would probably benefit from a full service prior to road use. The bike has matching numbers to the V5 and formed part of my private collection of historic bikes that have been on show in my showroom. MOT & Tax Exempt. I purchased the bike because it was such a lovely example of a British bike that had been the subject of a restoration in 1995 by a local motor engineer, David Watts in Shefford. David was an old school motor engineer who if he couldn't find a part then he was able to make it, the restoration took him around 4 years to complete to the standard seen here and since then it has been ridden for around 300 miles. The bike has the old style buff log book as well as the modern equivalent and other paperwork relating to the bike. Viewing essential, you won't be disappointed.

The Sunbeam S8 is a British motorcycles designed by Erling Poppe with styling loosely based on the BMW R75 designs that were acquired as war reparations by BSA (full rights to the Sunbeam brand had been acquired from AMC in 1943). Built in Redditch, the unusual engine layout was similar to that of a car. The engine was a longitudinally mounted inline vertical OHC 500 cc twin based on an experimental 1932 BSA design (the Line-Ahead-Twin - LAT) with coil ignition and wet sump lubrication which, through a dry clutch, drove a shaft drive to the rear wheel. The inline engine made this technologically feasible—horizontally-opposed ("flat") twin engines on BMW motorcycles had already used shaft drives following the system employed by Nimbus in 1918.

Due to the nature and age of our classic cars and bikes we are unable to offer warranties on these vehicles. All motorcycles registered before 1978 do not need an MOT test so we do recommend an independent inspection of the bike to satisfy yourself as to its roadworthiness. Clear of Finance and Insurance Damage, certificate supplied. Please bring your Driving Licence when test driving a vehicle.
