ROVER P6

With us here at RFH Classics we are pleased to bring you this wonderfully original 1970 (J) Rover P6 2000 SC finished in the very period correct Tobacco Leaf Brown exterior and complemented by an Ebony Ambla Vinyl interior trim. This elegant car in incredibly good overall condition and benefits from a desirable Webasto style full sunroof adding a touch of open-air refinement to an already distinguished saloon.

To accompany the car we have in the office a superb history file which includes the original hand typed purchase invoice dated 30th September 1970. The car was originally supplied new by Matson Garage of Gloucestershire to its first owner, Mr Adam of Bulls Cross, near Stroud who purchased the car for not insignificant sum of £1,689 which at the time included the options of a Bray Heater and safety belts, both of which are detailed on the invoice costing £10.00 each and still present today, underscoring the car’s authenticity and careful preservation. Mr Adam went on to own the car for over 30 years until December 2000 where it then passed to his wife and we have invoices from 2009 confirming she still owned the car.

In the history file there are a number of old MOT tests including one form 2001 where the mileage was recorded at 35,283 and over the following next 4 years the car only covers 141 miles before what appears to the a period where the car is not used until 2009 where the mileage is 35,435, indicating the car was in storage. While we cannot guarantee the cars low mileage due to its age, records would strongly indicate that todays recorded mileage is correct. We have in the folder the original Rover Handbook and an incredibly old orange disability parking badge for the first owner.

The Rover P6, introduced in 1963, marked a major step forward in executive motoring. Innovative in both design and engineering, it featured a De Dion rear suspension system, all four round disc brakes and a separate base unit to which the exterior panels were then fitted too, a design inspired by the Citroën DS and revolutionary for its time. It quickly garnered praise for its ride quality, safety and refinement and was notably the first winner of the European Car of the Year award in 1964. The 2000 SC model offered a fine balance between smooth performance and reliability, with the 1970 model year sitting proudly as part of the later and more developed production run. The Tobacco Leaf colour was one of Rover’s most distinctive offerings of the period and suits the crisp lines of the P6 beautifully.

While Matson Garage of Gloucestershire is no longer trading under that name, it clearly played a part in the strong dealer network Rover built across the UK during the marque’s golden era. This car stands as a lasting tribute to that time, not only as a highly useable and enjoyable classic but also as a well documented and cherished piece of British motoring history. In our opinion, this Rover P6 2000 SC is a standout example of one of Rover’s most respected saloons that is now serviced and MOT tested until May-26 ready for a new owner to enjoy on the road, the show field or maybe within a discerning collection.
