MG MGB
Convertible 1.8 Roadster. (1973/L)
With us here at RFH Classics we are delighted to offer this beautifully presented 1973 (L) MGB Roadster 1.8 finished in the wonderfully period shade of Blaze and complemented by a contrasting Black Vinyl interior with matching Black hood. A colour that could only really belong to the 1970s, Blaze suits the flowing lines and chrome detailing of the MGB particularly well, giving this example a distinctive character while remaining entirely in keeping with its era.
Within the accompanying history is a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate confirming Blaze as the car’s original factory colour and recording that it was originally supplied through Thomas Greenwood & Sons Ltd of Halifax, Yorkshire. For us, details such as these add genuine appeal to a classic, particularly when the car still presents today in the same colour in which it left the factory more than half a century ago.
The accompanying paperwork has now been compiled into one of our own RFH Classics history folders and includes a selection of older MOT certificates together with invoices and receipts dating between 1987 and 1993. In addition, a separate large folder contains an extensive collection of photographs documenting the car’s restoration, providing a valuable visual record of the work undertaken and allowing the next owner to look back through the process rather than simply relying on a written description. While not every year of the car’s life is documented, the combination of the Heritage Certificate, surviving historic paperwork and photographic restoration record gives this MGB a particularly interesting and tangible history.
Externally, the Blaze paintwork is complemented by bright chrome bumpers, attractive brightwork and distinctive chrome-finished Rostyle wheels. These add further visual presence while remaining sympathetic to the period character of the car, with the vivid coachwork, chrome detailing and simple open-top lines combining to create an unmistakably early-1970s British sports car.
Inside, the Black Vinyl trim provides an ideal contrast against the Blaze coachwork, while the classic dashboard layout and traditional instrumentation retain the straightforward and purposeful character that has always been central to the MGB’s appeal. Weather protection is provided by the matching Black Vinyl hood, maintaining the cohesive appearance of the car whether raised or lowered.
Under the bonnet sits the proven lead-free 1798cc four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with the four-speed manual gearbox and particularly desirable overdrive operating on both third and fourth gears. This remains one of the most appealing MGB drivetrain combinations, providing an engaging classic driving experience while allowing more relaxed progress on longer journeys.
During our preparation of the car we removed the chrome over-sill covers, as we routinely do, to inspect the sill areas beneath for any hidden corrosion concerns. Once removed, we felt the cleaner body lines better suited the overall appearance of the car and therefore elected not to refit them. The small fixing holes left by the covers have subsequently been professionally repaired and refinished, leaving a much cleaner and more natural sill profile ready for the next owner to enjoy.
What particularly appeals to us about this example is its strong sense of period identity. The factory-correct Blaze colour, Black trim, chrome detailing and Rostyle wheels combine beautifully, while the Heritage Certificate, extensive photographic restoration record, surviving early paperwork and desirable overdrive gearbox add genuine substance. The result is a very attractive MGB Roadster with both visual character and an interesting documented background.
