MG MGB GT

With us here at RFH Classics we are delighted to offer this very well presented 1974 (M) MGB GT 1.8, finished in the highly distinctive period shade of Aconite and complemented by a set of V8 Style Alloy Wheels. This is a colour that immediately sets this GT apart as being a bit special and is one that particularly suits the elegant lines and extensive chrome detailing of the earlier MGB GT. More recently, the car has benefited from a programme of refurbishment and improvement, including attention to the front and rear suspension with replacement springs and bushes, paintwork refurbishment, an interior refresh, refurbishment of the alloy wheels and detailing of the engine bay. This work has helped bring the overall presentation up to a very good standard while retaining the character the car has developed over many years.

Inside, the cabin retains its period-correct Black striped cloth upholstery which is in great condition and complemented by well-presented carpets, door cards and other interior trim. The familiar MGB dashboard and instrumentation retain the traditional appearance of the GT cockpit. The Coupe also offers a larger windscreen and a more accommodating driving environment than the Roadster, something that can make a noticeable difference for taller drivers who can find the lower Roadster screen restrictive. Add to this the greater practicality and luggage space and it's easy to understand why many owners favour the GT for regular and longer-distance use.

Under the bonnet you are presented with a very clean engine bay housing the well-proven 1798cc four-cylinder petrol engine, which starts readily and has excellent oil pressure both hot and cold. The engine has been converted for use with unleaded fuel and is paired with the four-speed manual gearbox with fully working Overdrive on both third and fourth gears. Having Overdrive is a particularly nice feature that makes the car noticeably more relaxed at cruising speeds and better suited to longer journeys.

Introduced in 1965, the MGB GT successfully combined the sporting character of the MGB with the practicality of a stylish fixed-head Coupe. Its distinctive roofline transformed the MGB into a genuinely useful sporting tourer while retaining much of the mechanical simplicity and driving character that made the original Roadster so successful.

Importantly, this car is accompanied by a comprehensive history file which we have now collated into one of our RFH Classics History Folders. It contains a substantial collection of invoices, receipts and supporting documentation dating back to 1989. The history records an extensive three-year restoration carried out between 1992 and 1995, supported by a selection of photographs illustrating the work. Together with the more recent refurbishment records, it provides a useful record of the care and expenditure this GT has received over many years.

Overall, we feel this is a particularly appealing MGB GT, combining its distinctive Aconite paintwork with V8 Style Alloy Wheels, Overdrive and a comprehensive documented history. The more recent improvements complement the earlier restoration, while the accompanying paperwork provides valuable background to the car and its life. The car benefits from Historic Vehicle status, qualifying for Historic Vehicle road tax and ULEZ exemption. Although MOT exempt due to its age, it comes with an MOT through to April 2027, providing additional reassurance for its next owner. It will also be supplied with our 3-month major mechanical warranty together with a vehicle history certificate confirming no outstanding finance or recorded insurance loss. As with all our classics, we recommend the use of premium unleaded E5 fuel.
