Dealing with a classic car or motorbike as part of an estate can be difficult, particularly when the person responsible for the estate has little knowledge of the vehicle, its history or its value.


RFH Classics can provide classic car probate valuations and practical assistance with vehicles forming part of an estate, drawing on more than 35 years' experience in the motor trade and our day-to-day involvement in the classic vehicle market.


Classic Car Probate Valuations


Where a vehicle requires a valuation for probate or estate administration purposes, we can assess the vehicle and provide a realistic opinion of its market value based on the individual car, its condition, specification, history and the market at the relevant time.


Classic vehicles can be particularly difficult to value from a price guide alone. Two apparently similar cars can differ considerably in value because of originality, restoration quality, provenance, ownership history and overall condition.


Understanding the Vehicle and Its History


Where possible, we will look beyond simply identifying the make, model and year. Documentation, old photographs, invoices, correspondence, registration records and other material accompanying a vehicle can all help establish its history and significance.


If you are dealing with a vehicle belonging to an estate, we would always recommend keeping any paperwork, photographs, manuals, spare parts or other items associated with it. What may initially appear unimportant can sometimes form a valuable part of the vehicle's history.


What Happens to the Vehicle Afterwards?


Once a valuation has been established, there may be several options. The family or beneficiaries may wish to retain the vehicle, or the executors may need to arrange its sale.


Where appropriate, RFH Classics may be able to purchase the vehicle directly or offer it for sale through our sale-on-return service. We can also assist with arranging collection where a vehicle cannot easily be driven or has been stored for a considerable period.


Vehicles in Long-Term Storage


We are accustomed to dealing with older vehicles that may have been stored in garages or outbuildings for many years. A vehicle does not need to be cleaned, recommissioned or made roadworthy before contacting us.


In many cases it is better to assess the vehicle as it stands before money is spent unnecessarily on repairs, restoration or preparation.

We appreciate that vehicles forming part of an estate can have considerable sentimental as well as financial value. Our approach is therefore straightforward and respectful, with no obligation to sell the vehicle to RFH Classics following a valuation or initial discussion.
