ROVER MINI

With us here at RFH Classics we are delighted to offer this exceptionally distinctive 1991 (J) Mini 1380, beautifully finished in the classic combination of Tartan Red with a contrasting Black roof. Recently arriving with us in part exchange, this highly individual Mini has been extensively restored and developed into the impressive sporting example you see today, with its fascinating transformation documented in a substantial feature within the February 2019 edition of MiniWorld magazine.

Immediately setting itself apart from the average modified Mini, this is a car that has clearly benefited from significant time, investment and enthusiasm throughout its life. Originally registered as a Rover Mini Neon, it has been transformed with the aim of capturing the appearance and character of the iconic earlier sporting Minis, creating a car that combines classic styling with carefully considered mechanical upgrades and outstanding visual presence.

The Tartan Red coachwork is complemented by a contrasting Black roof, stainless steel bumpers, Mk1-style grille, auxiliary driving lamps, leather bonnet straps and a host of period-inspired details that give the Mini a purposeful and unmistakably sporting appearance. Sitting on 10-inch JBW Dunlop D1-style alloy wheels shod with Yokohama tyres, the stance is exactly as a well-built classic Mini should be, attracting attention wherever it goes.

Inside, the same attention to detail continues. Later MPi front seats have been retrimmed in Black vinyl to match the rear seat, while the cabin benefits from Black carpeting, a Mountney steering wheel and the desirable early-style central three-clock instrument conversion. The result is an interior that successfully combines traditional Mini character with improved comfort and usability.

Mechanically, the Mini has been developed to complement its appearance. The accompanying MiniWorld feature documents a comprehensive engine build together with upgrades to the gearbox, suspension, braking system and cooling, all carried out to create a genuinely enjoyable fast-road Mini. Rather than simply enhancing the appearance, the work was undertaken to deliver the engaging driving experience enthusiasts expect from a car of this calibre.

One of the most appealing aspects of this Mini is its documented provenance. The extensive February 2019 MiniWorld feature not only tells the story of the restoration but also records the build specification and the specialists involved in the project, creating a valuable contemporary record of the car’s development that accompanies it today.

In the interests of complete transparency, the current V5C records the engine capacity as 1380cc, while the MiniWorld feature documents the car at the time of publication with a rebuilt 1293cc A-Series engine. The original loose invoice file understood to have accompanied the car during previous ownership is no longer present and, as such, we have not been able to conclusively establish whether the engine has subsequently been changed or whether the difference reflects an earlier DVLA registration. We therefore present both records openly rather than make assumptions regarding the car’s exact mechanical specification.

Whatever the explanation, there is no question that this is a beautifully presented and exceptionally well-executed Mini. Its magazine-feature history, extensive restoration and unmistakable presence make it a car that stands apart from many modified examples currently available, offering a wonderful opportunity to acquire a highly individual classic Mini with genuine character and a fascinating documented story.
