With us at RFH Classics we are delighted to offer this quite remarkable 1966 (D) MGB Roadster, a two-owner car that has covered less than 50,000 miles from new and survives today with an exceptional degree of originality. Supplied new by University Motors of London W1 in May 1966, its story is supported by an extraordinary history including the original purchase invoice, first owner's handwritten journal and an MG Owners Club feature dedicated to the car. The original University Motors invoice remains with the MGB and records factory specified extras including a heater, full tonneau cover and workshop manual. Remarkably, the workshop manual still accompanies the car today, together with an original hardtop believed to have been with the car from new. Its first owner would go on to keep the MGB for some 49 years, with the car only passing to its second custodian in 2015.

What makes this MGB so unusual is not simply its two-owner history or low mileage, but the level of originality that remains. This isn't a freshly restored MGB and nor would we want it to be. Remarkably, the body still wears its original factory-applied 1966 cellulose paint and has never been repainted. It naturally carries the gentle marks and imperfections accumulated over six decades, but these form an important part of the car's authenticity and are something that simply cannot be recreated by restoration. That same originality continues throughout. The MGB retains its factory-correct pressed-steel road wheels with chrome hubcaps and original brightwork, while inside the Black leather seats have developed a wonderful age-related patina. The original rubber mats remain in the footwells together with the carpeted transmission tunnel, which itself displays the lovely gentle wear that can only really come from six decades of careful use. Mechanically the car also remains remarkably original, with the notable modification being the addition of an unleaded cylinder head for continued use with modern fuel.

Perhaps the most fascinating part of the car is its history. The first owner kept a handwritten journal recording journeys, servicing and maintenance throughout his near half-century with the MGB, and that journal remains carefully preserved within the history file today. When the time eventually came to part with the car in 2015, he advertised it through MG Mart and was apparently as interested in finding the right next custodian as he was in simply selling the car. The second owner continued that approach to preservation and such was the interest in the MGB that the MG Owners Club subsequently visited and featured the car, describing it at the time as “probably the finest original MGB available.” Coming from the MG Owners Club, it is a significant assessment and helps explain why preservation rather than restoration has remained so important throughout the car's life.

Today this MGB presents as a wonderfully honest survivor. Its two-owner provenance, less than 50,000 miles, original University Motors invoice, first owner's journal, original paintwork and remarkably preserved interior all come together to tell a story spanning six decades. These are qualities that simply cannot be recreated through restoration. For us, that is what makes this MGB a bit special. It remains a car that can be driven and enjoyed as an MGB should be, but at the same time offers something increasingly difficult to find: an unrestored example whose history can be traced back to its original supplying dealer and first owner. Its originality and character really are far easier to appreciate in person than photographs alone can convey.

The car benefits from Historic Vehicle status, qualifying for Historic Vehicle road tax and ULEZ exemption. Although MOT exempt due to its age, a new 12-month MOT will be provided for its next custodian as part of our preparation prior to delivery. It will also be supplied with our 3-month major mechanical warranty together with a vehicle history certificate confirming no outstanding finance or recorded insurance loss. As with all our classics, we recommend the use of premium unleaded E5 fuel.
