Just Arrived

MG MGB

Convertible (1980/V)

Just arrived with us at RFH Classics we are pleased to offer this quite exceptional and rather unusual 1980 (V) MGB Roadster finished in very period Russet Brown, a colour rarely seen today. We have to say this is a colour that really suits the rubber bumper model particularly well and gives the car a very distinctive and individual appearance. The car, which was built late 1979, was first registered and supplied new by Abbey Motors of Hemel Hempstead in early January 1980 all of which is noted on the Heritage Certificate included in the substantial history folder.

The well documented history file is extensive and includes MOT records dating back to 1998 together with service invoices from 2010 onwards, a selection of old tax discs, previous V5 copies and DVLA correspondence all of which go to support the car’s long and well recorded life. Within the file there is reference to the car having been restored in the late 1980s / early 1990s by the well regarded restoration specialists Fishers of Droitwich, Worcestershire. They undertook a major project to the body and re-trimmed the interior with the leather seen today. Their reputation for high quality work is evident in the way the car presents today, if you were told it was done 2 yrs ago you wouldn’t doubt it as it still exceptional. Records suggest the car had covered approximately 83,000 miles when the restoration was undertaken, at which point an engine rebuild was included as part of the work. Since then the car has covered only around 19,000 miles over the past 35 years.

Records indicate the car then spent many years in dry storage as part of the collection of cars owned by a keen MG enthusiast who commissioned the restoration work, this would probably explain the outstanding condition of the car today. The bodywork remains in exceptionally condition with excellent seams, sills and floors and the paintwork retaining its deep, consistent shine. Panel fit is excellent throughout and the car has the solid, well restored feel that is so often missing from less well restored cars.

Approximately two years ago the car underwent a light recommission which included a full service together with replacement shock absorbers and a new OE spec hood, with the desirable opening rear window. Since then the car has covered only minimal mileage and has been carefully stored in a warm, dry garage by the former owner, who owned the car for sixteen years.

The car has upgraded Minilite style Alloy wheels and overall, with the replacement leather trim which is complemented by a dark brown carpets, is a truly lovely example. This colour combination works particularly well with the Russet Brown exterior and gives the car a more bespoke feel whilst still retaining the character of an MGB.

Under the bonnet the car is finished to the same high standard as the exterior with a well detailed engine bay housing the lead-free 1798cc B-Series engine. The car starts easily with minimal choke and quickly settles to a smooth and even idle with excellent cold and hot oil pressure. The engine is paired to a four speed manual gearbox that has a fully functioning overdrive for third and fourth gears helping to make the car equally well suited to relaxed touring or enjoyable weekend driving.

This is without doubt lone of the nicest late rubber bumper cars we have had the pleasure of offering for sale for some time and if you are in the market for something a little different it must certainly rank high on your viewing list. Early enquiries are recommended as we expect this car to attract plenty of interest.
