With us at RFH Classics we are delighted to offer this very elegant 1961 MGA 1600 Coupe beautifully finished in Orient Red with a contrasting Black Leather interior featuring Red piping. Sitting on chrome wire wheels and benefiting from a desirable 5-speed gearbox conversion, this is a particularly attractive example of one of the less commonly seen and arguably most usable models in the MGA range.
Coming to us from long term previous ownership, the car has clearly been well cared for and maintained. It was the subject of an older restoration which has matured nicely and today presents as a smart, honest and very usable classic rather than an overly restored example that you might be reluctant to take out and enjoy.
One of the most worthwhile improvements is the 5-speed gearbox conversion. While retaining the character of the MGA, the additional ratio makes a noticeable difference on today’s roads, particularly at cruising speeds, and makes this a car that can comfortably be considered for longer journeys as well as Sunday morning drives. This is complemented by upgraded carburettors, another subtle modification aimed at making the car well suited to regular use while retaining its traditional MGA character.
Externally, the Orient Red paintwork presents extremely well and particularly suits the flowing lines of the fixed-head Coupe. Chrome wire wheels with traditional eared spinners complete the period appearance, while the chrome boot rack provides a useful addition should the next owner have touring in mind.
Inside, the Black Leather upholstery with contrasting Red piping complements the exterior beautifully. The Coupe offers a rather different experience from the more familiar MGA Roadster, with its distinctive roofline creating a more enclosed and refined cabin while retaining the driving character for which the MGA has become so well regarded.
Importantly, the car is accompanied by a comprehensive history file containing previous MOT certificates, maintenance invoices and receipts together with its original buff-style log book, providing an interesting record of its life as a UK registered example.
Overall, this is a very appealing MGA 1600 Coupe combining handsome period looks with sensible improvements that make it particularly enjoyable in modern use. The 5-speed gearbox, chrome wire wheels, attractive colour combination and good history all add to what is already a considerably less common alternative to the traditional MGA Roadster.
The car qualifies for Historic Vehicle road tax and is ULEZ exempt. Although MOT exempt due to its age, the car was submitted for an MOT as part of our preparation and passed with no advisories and so will come with a August 27 test providing additional reassurance for its next owner. It will be supplied with our 3-month major mechanical warranty and a vehicle history certificate confirming it is clear of outstanding finance and insurance damage.
