AUSTIN HEALEY FROGEYE SPRITE

Just arrived at RFH Classics we have this delightful 1959 Austin Healey Sprite MK1, affectionately known as the 'Frogeye'. Finished in the popular period shade of Iris Blue, this car has benefitted from a comprehensive restoration and a number of desirable mechanical upgrades, making it a more enjoyable and usable car for todays road conditions. The car, owned by the last keeper for the past 24 years, is in superb condition and ready to be enjoyed by a new owner whether for late summer drives, classic tours or local club events.

Originally registered in Glasgow on the 28th of February 1959, the Sprite was first delivered to a Mr William Jarret, who paid the princely sum of just under £700 for his new sports car. Originally supplied in Nevada Beige the car has since been fully restored to a very high standard and presents beautifully in a colour that perfectly captures the cheerful personality and iconic shape that earned the model its Frogeye nickname. Importantly, the car retains its original steel bonnet, a feature many have lost over time to the fibreglass replacements.

Under the bonnet now sits a later 1098cc BMC 'Silver Seal' exchange engine which brings a welcome increase in performance over the original 948cc unit while still running on the correct twin SU carburettors. Further improvements include the stronger and smoother 1275-spec ribbed gearbox and a front disc brake conversion, all very desirable and do not detract from its period charm. The car's history file shows very light use over the past two decades, covering fewer than 2,500 miles in more than 20 years. During this time, it was professionally stored and then the subject of a light recommission in 2014 just prior to a trouble free 600 mile round trip to the Le Mans Classic. In later years, between 2021 and 2022, the Sprite underwent a major restoration including new floors, sills and A-pillars followed by a bare metal respray and a thorough reconditioning or replacement of the cars ancillary components.

Since completion, the car has been driven sparingly and always in dry weather with journeys generally being to local classic car shows. With its extensive restoration now complete and mileage believed genuine, this Frogeye is ready for its next custodian. Accompanying the car is a high quality black vinyl soft top, side screens as well as a full tonneau cover ready to protect you from those inevitable encounters with the British weather.
