From long term ownership

AUSTIN A30

Saloon 2 Dr Saloon (1956)

Just arrived with us at RFH Classics is this charming 1956 Austin A30 2-Door finished in the period shade of Spruce Green with a contrasting Beige vinyl trim. Direct to us from long term previous ownership, the last keeper purchased the car back in 2006, this A30 has clearly benefitted from an exceptionally careful stewardship throughout. It comes complete with a comprehensive history folder, compiled during that ownership, that helps to provide a detailed account of the extensive refurbishment and ongoing maintenance undertaken over the years, exactly the sort of provenance we look for in these post war baby Austins.

Launched at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show as the “New Austin Seven,” the A30 was Austin’s compact answer to the Morris Minor and the first Austin to feature a fully stressed monocoque body. It also introduced the now legendary A-Series engine to millions of motorists and by the time production ended in 1956 over 223,000 examples had been built at Longbridge. Distinguishing features versus its later A35 successor include the smaller rear window and trafficator indicators that pop out from the B-pillars.

Under the bonnet sits the original-type 803 cc A-Series OHV four cylinder engine with a single Zenith carburettor which offers a smooth and eager performance that remains wonderfully simple to service with an excellent parts support still available today. Power is delivered through a 4 speed manual gearbox featuring synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and top, with 1st remaining non synchro as per period practice. The gearbox provides a light, mechanical change that rewards an unhurried hand, and once warm the little A30 settles into the relaxed, torquey gait these cars are so well loved for.

The car retains its original dateless registration number and while its historical connection makes it priceless as part of the vehicle’s identity, the plate itself holds independent market appeal with similar three letter, three number marks achieving £1,500–£1,700 when offered to the open market.

Altogether, this A30 stands as a delightful survivor from the golden age of British motoring, starting, driving and stopping exactly as an A30 should. With light controls, honest performance and outstanding parts availability, it makes an ideal entry point into classic motoring, perfect for local shows, Sunday morning runs or simply reliving a gentler era of British engineering.
