MG MGB

With us at RFH Classics we have this special edition 1981 (W) MGB GT LE finished in Pewter Silver with Black Leather. This limited production run of 1,001 cars were the final MGB’s built at the Abingdon plant and celebrated 50 years of the MG. They were produced in both the Roadster and GT variants with there being 421 Roadsters and 580 GT’s. For the British market the GT variant was produced in the unique Pewter Silver Metallic Paint with the Roadster being Bronze Metallic for the UK and Black for the states. They featured a special decal that was fixed to the bottom half of the bodywork to distinguish the car. Internally they were fitted with the commonly referred to 'Deck Chair' style cloth trim in either Grey for the GT or Orange for the Roadster and the LE cars came standard with the GKN Alloy Wheel as part of the standard equipment for final MGB’s built. This particular car is number is one of the 580 GT cars and is an original UK supplied cars. It has been the subject of an extensive rebuild over the past couple of years resulting in the very clean example offered here.

During the restoration the car was the subject of an extensive bodywork restoration and professionally repainted in the correct factory finish. The panel gaps are exceptional and the paint finish today is in our opinion probably to a better standard than it left the factory some 50 years ago. The GKN Alloy Wheels, which over the years became prone to pitting have been the subject of a full restoration and as a result the car presents really well. The interior of this car largely remains original except the seats that now feature the widely accepted upgrade of Black Leather to both the front and rear seats. Under the bonnet the 1800cc Petrol engine is fitted with twin carburettors and paired to a 4 speed manual gearbox that benefits from an Overdrive for 3rd and 4th gear. We have given the car a good run out and it drives very well with excellent oil pressure both on cold start and during normal driving and a fully working Overdrive.

This GT is eligible for zero rated Historic car tax and so also ULEZ Exempt which with the low cost of classic car insurance, makes for a very affordable car to own.
