MG MGB

Convertible (1980/V)

Just arrived with us at RFH Classics we are pleased to offer this quite exceptional and rather unusual MGB Roadster finished in Russet Brown, a colour that is rarely seen today. In our opinion this is one of those true period colours that works well on the later rubber bumper cars and gives the car a very distinctive and individual appearance.

Noted on the Heritage Certificate in file, the car was built towards the end of 1979 and supplied new by Abbey Motors of Hemel Hempstead before being first registered at the end of January 1980. It is always good to see the original supplying dealer recorded and this detail together with the accompanying paperwork helps build a very interesting history for the car.

The history file is extensive and includes MOT records dating back to 1998 together with service invoices from 2010 onwards as well as a selection of old tax discs, previous V5 copies and DVLA correspondence al of which helps to support the car’s long and well documented life. Within the history there is reference to the car having been restored in the late 1980s / early 1990s by the well known restoration specialists Fishers of Droitwitch in Worcestershire who carried out major work to the body and also re-trimmed the interior in leather at that time. As their reputation for good work shows in the car today, the car was restored to the highest standards and presents exceptionally well today. Records suggest the car had covered approximately 83,000 miles when the restoration was undertaken, at which point the engine was rebuilt as part of the restoration work. Since then the car has covered only around 19,000 miles over the past 35 years.

We understand the car has spent many years in dry storage forming part of the collection of cars owned by a keen MG enthusiast who commissioned the work. This goes a long way to explaining the outstanding condition of the car with the bodywork remaining exceptionally straight with excellent seams, sills and floors and the paint finish still shows a deep consistent shine. Panel fit is very good throughout and the car has the solid, well-restored feel that is so often missing from lesser examples.

Around two years ago the car was lightly recommissioned after a period of very little use at which point it received a full service together with replacement shock absorbers and the fitting of a new OE spec hood complete with the desirable opening rear window. Since then the car has done minimal mileage and has always been stored in a warm, dry garage under the by the last owner who we purchased the car from after he had enjoyed sixteen years of ownership.

During the restoration the car was upgraded with Minilite-style alloy wheels along with a replacement Leather interior trimmed in Light Biscuit Beige that complements the contrasting dark brown carpets. This colour combination works well with the Russet Brown exterior and gives the car a slightly more bespoke feel whilst still remaining very much in keeping with the character of the MGB.

Under the bonnet the car is presented to the same high standard as the exterior, with a clean and well detailed engine bay housing the lead-free 1798cc B-Series engine. The car starts easily with minimal choke, quickly settling to a smooth and even idle with excellent oil pressure as it should. The engine is paired to the desirable four-speed manual gearbox complete with fully functioning overdrive operating on both third and fourth gears, making the car equally suited to relaxed touring as it is to enjoyable weekend driving.

The doors shut beautifully, the panel fit is excellent throughout and overall this is a car that really stands out from the crowd. Finished in what many would describe as a true “marmite” colour, this Russet Brown MGB is without doubt one of the nicest late rubber bumper cars we have offered for some time and if you are looking for something a little different, it should certainly be high on your viewing list.

Further details, photographs and video to follow shortly.
Early enquiries are recommended as we expect this car to attract plenty of interest.
